About Doug and June

This Blog was the brainchild of Doug and June...as they spend as much time discussing food as just about anything else. I (June) suggested Food Porn as a name for this blog, but he (Doug) thought people would get the wrong idea and be looking for some oddly shaped cucumbers or something like that and I had to agree. So he came up with Food DJ (Food Doug & June) if you couldn't figure it out on your own. But you will find here is some awesome recipes and lovely pictures of food (and possibly the equally lovely Doug eating said food). However just warning you, I believe Doug has an unhealthy preoccupation with bacon. Might I (June)add that I love glossy, scrumptious, food-porn-filled cookbooks? The glossy paper, the photos that ooze calories, the chatty yet suggestive descriptions... ahh I smell sex and bacon.

FOOD GIFT in a Jar.. Easy & Delicious Gifts part I

Gifts in a jar! These frugal consumable gifts feature, cookie ingredients, holiday beverage mixes, baking mixes or bean soup fixings layered in a glass canning jar, or Mason jar.  Mason jar recipes make easy homemade Christmas gifts. Topped with a colorful fabric circle and a free printable gift tag, they're a welcome holiday treat.

Blueberry Muffin Mix in a Jar

  • 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 3/4 to 1 cup dried blueberries

  • Pour sugar into a 1-quart wide-mouth canning jar.
Sift together the flour, baking powder, soda and salt; pour half into the jar. Put the dried blueberries into a small lightweight plastic bag; tie or seal and cut off excess bag end, if necessary.* Add remaining flour mixture. Screw lid on and add a tag with instructions, or tuck instructions into the jar.
*You can add the dried blueberries right into the mixture without the bag, but they tend to sink into the dry ingredients. The bag will give the mix more of a "layered" look. Instructions for muffins. (include with jar)

    Wild Dried Blueberry Muffins

    2 eggs
    4 ounces melted butter
    1 cup milk or buttermilk
    1 teaspoon vanilla
1 jar blueberry muffin mix with dried blueberries
Whisk together the eggs, butter, milk or buttermilk, and vanilla. With a wooden spoon, stir in blueberry muffin mix just until dry ingredients are moistened.
Spoon batter into greased muffin pans, filling each muffin cup about 3/4 full. If desired, sprinkle tops with sugar or cinnamon sugar. Bake at 375° for about 25 minutes.

Makes 18 to 24 muffins, depending on size of muffin cups.

S'Mores In A Jar! What could be better? Combining the flavors of the familiar campfire treat with the seasonal sweetness of Peeps ® brand marshmallow candies, this recipe creates easy holiday gifts in a jar for all occasions. Choose your Peeps to match the season!
This gifts in a jar recipe is easy enough for children to make. To create this Mason jar gift, you'll layer crushed graham crackers, Marshmallow Peeps, brown sugar and chocolate pieces in a clear glass canning jar.

1 canning jar, quart-size with lid and ring
1 sleeve graham crackers (about 10 crackers or 1 1/2 cups of crushed crackers)
1 large package seasonal peeps ® brand marshmallow candies
    1⁄3 cup brown sugar, packed
1 1⁄4 cup chocolate chips or seasonal m&ms brand milk chocolate candies

    1. Place graham crackers in a zipper freezer food storage bag. Use a rolling pin or meat tenderizer to crush crackers into crumbs. (You'll need about 1 1/2 cup of crushed crumbs: one "sleeve" of graham crackers, or about 10 whole crackers equals 1 1/2 cup when crushed.)
    2. Place graham cracker crumbs into quart-sized canning jar. Use a meat tenderizer to pack crumbs tightly into the bottom of the jar.
    3. Place Peeps candies against the glass on all sides of the canning jar. Press lightly to create a well in the center of the jar. (You'll use approximately 2/3rds of the package; our Halloween recipe used 6 of a 9-pack package of Ghost Peeps.)
    4. Add brown sugar to the space in the center of the Peeps, pressing gently to pack.
    5. Gently add chocolate chips or M&Ms to the top of the canning jar. Seal jar with lid and sealer ring.
    6. Embellish jar with fabric circle, ribbon or raffia.
    7. Print a printable gift tag, or create your own tag with the recipe below
